Winter & Spring 2015 Programme   (7:30 pm, bar from 7pm)

Sat 7th Feb       Union Jill       Sharon Turner and Helen Winfield       website     youtube

Union Jill, the York-based duo of Sharon Turner and Helen Winfield, are singers, instrumentalists and songwriters showcasing a variety of strong songs in an upbeat style. Snappy and upbeat, their vocals are as tight as a drum and they have a blend of voices good enough to be siblings. They weave spellbinding effects with their rich harmonies. Playing their own material, they’ve established an appealing stage presence and gathered an ever-growing fan base across the UK. Taking their inspiration from a wide range of styles, Union Jill bring their own energy and passion to the acoustic music scene. They mix traditional folk instrumentation (guitars, mandola, concertina) with an edgy contemporary feel and powerful vocal delivery. Sharon and Helen’s ability to tell a story through lyrics draws in audiences of all types. Their material embraces historical themes and contemporary issues; personal experiences and protest songs. They have an on-stage banter that you only get from two women sharing a stage.

"Stunning duo, great musicianship, harmonies and presentation, songs both thought-provoking and entertaining. They will deservedly be going a long way. See them now!" - Topic Folk Club

With their album 'Respectable Rebellion' launched in May 2013, their star is on the rise. Review here. The album has been produced by Clive Gregson and features eminent musicians in support including Fairport's Dave Pegg.

"Sharon Winfield and Helen Turner [have] established themselves as a duo to watch out for. Accomplished writers and performers... there is something instinctive, symbiotic almost, in the way they blend as musicians." - Oz Hardwick, Rock n Reel

Sat 7th Mar     Library Theatre Touring Company presents   '2 Talking Heads'   by Alan Bennett

ALAN BENNETT sealed his reputation as the master of observation with this series of 12 ground-breaking monologues. Darkly comic, tragically poignant and wonderfully uplifting, the series of ‘Talking Heads’ is widely regarded as a modern classic.

SOLDIERING ON. Muriel is the recently widowed wife of a stockbroker. Complete with twin-set and pearls, she starts to take control of her own life - past, present and future. But gradually she discovers that all her assets, and even her memories, have been stripped away.

LADY OF LETTERS. Miss Ruddock’s civil liberties are dear to her, and writing letters is how she likes to assert those rights. One of these missives pushes her to the brink, with unexpected, but liberating consequences

We are looking forward to yet another inspired performance by the Library Theatre Touring Company.

Sat 2nd May   Dean Taylor Productions present 'Macbeth Speaks'   www.deantaylorproductions.co.uk

Dean Taylor Theatre Productions will be known to many of you for their much acclaimed Shakespeare performance across the North West every Summer, at such venues as Whalley Abbey and Skipton Castle, And not least for Dean's 'Actor’s Apology, here in March 2014."

Macbeth returns to our world in the present to put the record straight. Shakespeare ("that bald little scribe") got it wrong. He deceived. Macbeth was not the tragedy we know and accept as gospel but rather its truth is a tale of legitimate power and benevolence.

Shakespeare is questioned, reflected and challenged in the name of historical truth and justice. However, the tone is comedic, ironical with a healthy caustic undertone often very funny when worn by one who feels ‘hard done by’.
